Suggested Readings For Couples Therapists Gurman, A. (2008). Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy. Guilford Press. New York. This updated text is full of practical tools for all the leading approaches & issues in couples therapy. Weeks, G.R., Odell, M., Methven, S. (2005). If only I had known: Avoiding common mistakes in couple therapy. New York: Norton. The co-authors draw on more than thirty years of clinical experience to show young therapists how and how not to conduct psychotherapy. Each chapter begins with a case vignette illustrating a common mistake (e.g., promoting unrealistic expectations, taking sides), then describes the mistake in detail, explains why therapists make the mistake, and offers tactics for avoiding the mistake. Gottman, J.M. (1999). The marriage clinic. New York: Norton. This inclusive description of the Gottman approach to couples therapy is also a short-term modular approach, similar to Hope approach. The two approaches blend together well. Christensen, A., & Jacobson, N. S. (2002). Reconcilable Differences. New York: Guilford Press. Built on the best research written by leading couples researchers, this practical book can be used as a tool in therapy with couples. MMATE Center Contacts Jennifer S.
